FAQ:
It is designed to help babies who may be having trouble learning how to breastfeed. The silicone teat provides a firm stimulus at the roof of the baby’s mouth that can help them suck more effectively.
Superficial nipple fissures may heal within a few hours to a day, while deeper fissures can take two to three weeks to completely heal. Nipple fissures, also called cracked nipples or chapped nipples, cause inflammation, burning, and pain around the areola.
A nipple shield is almost like a second nipple. It goes over your breast and nipple and has tiny holes at the end where milk can transfer from your nipple to your baby’s mouth. It helps infants with trouble latching onto the breast by acting like a longer, firmer nipple.
Once your baby is able to latch on herself and breastfeed effectively (this may take several days or several weeks), a nipple shield should no longer be used. Nipples shields are meant for short-term use only. Weigh your baby frequently (at least once a week) while using the shield.
Using a nipple shield incorrectly may reduce milk supply. Breastfeeding correctly causes your body to make hormones that keep up your milk supply. A nipple shield should be put on properly so that your baby can latch deeply and drink well from your breast.
