All breast pump parts that come in contact with breast milk, such as bottles, valves and breast shields, should be cleaned after each use. It is not possible to completely sterilize breast pump parts at home, even if you boil them. However, sterilization is not necessary to keep these parts safe and sanitized.
Spend 15 to 20 minutes hooked up to the pump to get a good amount of breast milk (some women will need 30 minutes or more with the pump, especially in the early days). Pump until the milk starts slowing down and your breasts feel well-drained.
Empty means that you have removed the majority of the milk from your breasts. When your breasts are empty after pumping, they should feel soft, floppy, or flat like pancakes. You should not be able to feel any lumps.
The majority of new mothers get the most milk early in the day. Plan to pump at least 8-10 times in a 24-hour period (if exclusively pumping) You can pump in-between, or immediately after, breastfeeding.
Mixing freshly expressed breast milk with already cooled or frozen milk is not advised because it can rewarm the older stored milk. It is best to cool freshly expressed milk before combining it with older, previously cooled or frozen milk.
You can grab this same bottle three hours later and continue pumping into it. Or, if you’re power pumping to increase your supply, you can pump into the same bottles multiple times within the four hour window.
