- Switch breasts when your milk starts slowing down.
- Once you’ve emptied both breasts, remove the breast shield, and put a lid (make sure it’s screwed on properly) on the bottle.
- Wash and sterilise the pump and parts.
Safety information:
- Make sure your pump and all the parts (bottles, valves, funnel etc) are clean and sterile before using them.
FAQ:
Pump for about 15 to 20 minutes hooked up to the pump to get a good amount of breast milk. Pump until the milk starts slowing down and your breasts feel well-drained. Be sure to clean the breast flanges after every use.
At work, you should try pumping every three to four hours for around 15 minutes a session.
Because hands-on pumping helps you to drain the breast more fully each time you pump, it helps increase your milk supply and helps you provide more of the fatty hindmilk that will help your baby grow.
Once you begin to pump, there should be a small amount of air around your nipple. During the first 10-15 seconds, you may feel a bit uncomfortable as your nipples start to stretch. Then as your milk starts to flow, you may feel a tingling “pins and needles” sensation.
- Clean by hand.
- Place pump parts in a clean wash basin used only for washing infant feeding equipment.
- Fill wash basin with hot water and add soap.
- Scrub items according to pump kit manufacturer’s guidance. Rinse well and dry thoroughly.
After each pumping, you can keep milk at room temperature for up to 4 hours.
