Apply a hot pack wrapped in a towel for 20 to 30 minutes at a time. Some physical therapists recommend alternating between heat and cold for people with painful muscle spasms or chronic problems such as arthritis.
The temperature and duration both depend on the size of the product and how well it is insulated during use. A standard size hand warmer can last for about 45 minutes. Larger packs can last for at least that amount of time.
Because of its unique shape, the pack freezes in less time than other packs (about four hours) and stays cold for more than 24 hours. It doesn’t sweat, and is completely re-freezable and re-usable.
Ice packs can last for long durations, given that it is placed inside a well-insulated container. At conditions of optimum insulation, an ice gel pack will last about 24-36 hours. Alternatively, at room temperature, an Ice Gel Pack will only last 2-3 hours.
The key is to ice for 20 minutes, causing the vessels to narrow, and then heat for 15 minutes, causing the vessels to dilate. This acts as a pumping mechanism to the inflammation, pushing it away from the injured area.
It’s best to use cold when the pain is still sharp and move on to heat once that sharpness has subsided. The heat will increase blood flow and help tissues heal faster.
