Wrap the body part in a clean, moist cloth, place it in a sealed plastic bag, and soak the bag in cold water (ice water if possible). Cooling the cut bodily part will keep it alive far longer than leaving it at ambient temperature or higher.
It’s also critical to keep it dry. When skin becomes water logged and pruney, it indicates the beginning of that tissue breaking down, making reattachment more difficult.
If an accident or trauma results in complete amputation (the body part is completely severed), the portion can sometimes be reattached, especially if the severed part and stump, or residual limb, are properly cared for. Some soft-tissue attachment remains after a partial amputation.
