- Normal near vision is known as N6, with ‘N’ referring to near and the ‘6’ referring to the size of the letters;
- If you can read N5 its quite ok and N8 your vision is poor.
- You should wear glasses if you need to read or for close work based on the test result.
Direction Of Use
- Ask the person to hold the chart at the distance they want to see clearly (the desired working distance) with both eyes open.
- Ask them to read the smallest line or show the smallest shapes they can see clearly. Write this down as their near visual acuity (e.g., N6 or J6).

A normal eye is considered to have a near point at about 11 cm (4.3 in) for a thirty-year-old. The near point is highly age dependent.
Near Vision Acuity represents the smallest sized print that can be read. N5 is the smallest sized type that you will normally find and N8 is approximately the size of normal newsprint.
20/20 vision is normal vision acuity (the clarity or sharpness of vision) measured at a distance of 20 feet. If you have 20/20 vision, you can see clearly at 20 feet what should normally be seen at a distance.
Check each eye separately, first the right and then the left. Keep both eyes open and cover one eye with the palm of the hand. Read the chart, beginning with the top line and moving down the lines until it is too difficult to read the letters. Record the number of the smallest line that you know you read correctly.
