- Milk ThistlePhysicians and herbalists have used Milk Thistle (MT) to treat numerous liver problems (fatty liver disease, hepatitis, cirrhosis), gallbladder diseases and to protect the liver against a variety of poisons (mushroom poisoning). The scientific name for milk thistle is Silybum marianum and is a member of the aster or daisy family. The active complex of MT is a lipophilic extract from the seeds of the plant and is composed of three isomer flavonolignans (silybin, silydianin, and silychristin) collectively known as silymarin. MT protects the liver by three major mechanisms: -Antioxidant activity by reducing free radical production and lipid peroxidation. Silymarin enhances hepatic glutathione generation and regulates cysteine synthesis which contributes to the antioxidant defense. -Anti-inflammatory action regulates and inhibits the expression of COX-2, a key mediator of inflammatory pathways. -Anti-fibrotic action which indirectly prevents the deposition of collagen fibers that lead to liver injury progression. MT is available in capsule form, tablet, or as a liquid extract. It is quite rare but adverse effects of milk thistle has been reported: Gastroenteritis Diarrhea Headache Dermatological symptoms (hives, rash, pruritus).
