A nebulizer is a piece of medical equipment that a person with asthma or another respiratory condition can use to administer medication directly and quickly to the lungs. A nebulizer turns liquid medicine into a very fine mist that a person can inhale through a face mask or mouthpiece.

A saline water solution or purified water can be used in your nebulizer instead of medicine. If you’re travelling and forgot your medication and you really just need a quick session with your nebulizer, water mist has the healing properties to calm the nasal passage and enter the lungs.

Soak in 70% isopropyl alcohol for 5 minutes. Soak in 3% hydrogen peroxide for 30 minutes. Rinse off the cold-method disinfectant using sterile water, not tap water. Air-dry the nebulizer parts before storage.

Breathe in and out slowly and deeply through your mouth until the mist is gone. The session is over when all the medicine is gone or there is no more mist coming out. The whole session may take up to 20 minutes. The machine may also make a sputtering noise when the session is done.

If the nebulizer compressor is not working, check your power source. Make sure the plug is firmly inserted in the outlet. If you have a portable nebulizer, check the batteries to make sure they have a charge or if they need to be replaced. Nebulizers rarely have issues with their compressors.

A compressor nebulizer uses compressed air to create the aerosol. A mesh nebulizer uses a vibrating element oscillating at high frequency to push medication through fine holes in the mesh, generating aerosol droplets.
