Directions for Use
- Bring the straw cup with water, breast milk, or formula to the table and offer the straw to your baby by holding it in front of their mouth.
- Let your baby open their mouth and lean in to accept the straw, then give a little squeeze to the cup, which will express a small amount of the liquid into your baby’s mouth.
- Most babies will respond by immediately sealing their lips to swallow, which helps them learn to close their lips around the straw.
- After practicing like this several times, you can offer the straw cup to your baby but do not squeeze. Wait and see if they try to get the liquid out on their own by sucking.
Safety Information:
- Use a firm straw that won’t collapse.
- If a baby is actively refusing to try drinking with a straw cup, try changing the environment. Pick up your baby and interact for a moment, capturing their attention, then casually walk over to the cup, pick it up, and start drinking. After a few sips, smile big at your baby and make a funny moment.
FAQ
A baby can drink from a straw starting at 6 months old. This is common because 6-month-olds have a strong sucking reflex and can use that pattern successfully on a straw.
Drinking from a straw encourages your child to develop that more advanced way of sucking and swallowing. When using a straw to drink, he or she is strengthening the lip, tongue, and cheek muscles.
By drinking from a straw cup or an open cup your child must use more movement and control from their jaw, tongue, lips, and cheeks. This additional movement (in part to prevent spillage) works on strengthening their oral motor skills and can contribute to their speech development.
The best age to transition to a straw cup is between 9 and 15 months of age though it may vary depending on the baby. Just like introducing a sippy cup, there should be no major changes taking place in baby’s life while introducing a straw cup. Straw cups normally come with flexible and hard straws.
A straw cup will help to build lip, cheek, and tongue strength and will promote an appropriate resting position of the tongue for future speech development and a proper swallow pattern. A sippy cup on the other hand will encourage a forward tongue resting position, which often results in a frontal lingual lisp.
